Color Management

What is Color Management?

Color Management is the calibration and profiling of your computer and accessories to get predictable and reasonably identical color from all your devices.  Never get an off-color print again!  Devices such as monitors, scanners, cameras, printers, film recorders, and video projectors, and print media such as newspapers and magazines can all be color managed.

Color Management consists of measuring the color characteristics of each of your input (scanners and cameras) and output devices (monitors and printers) and assigning each device a color profile.  Color management uses spectrophotometers and special software to take precise measurements and create the color profiles that a color management system uses.

Colors on your monitor rarely match your printer or even someone else’s monitor because of a variety of factors including:

  • Color, brightness and purity of the colorants or phosphors
  • Color and brightness of the white and black points (includes paper characteristics
  • Tone reproduction characteristics of the colorants
  • Device problems
  • Environmental differences and lighting

To implement color management in your facility, you will need to:

  • Calibrate and profile your monitor
  • Work in a standard color space
  • Calibrate and profile your printer(s)
  • Calibrate and profile your cameras/scanners
  • Convert from working space to printer space when you make a print
