For the DETECT study, about 120 people above the age of 18 who are going through chemotherapy are being recruited. These participants will begin with free basic medical tests and their first or baseline cardiovascular MRI before chemotherapy begins.
They will be monitored for the next six to eight months and have three additional MRIs to determine if there is any heart damage that may be caused by the chemotherapy. Results of all of these tests for DETECT participants can be sent to their primary care physicians. Greg Hundley, M.D., a professor of Cardiology, Internal Medicine, and Radiology, is the principal investigator for the study. He noted that the study is a collaborative project with Wake Forest University School of Medicine and N.C. Baptist Hospital, involving the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Hematology/Oncology, Internal Medicine, Public Health Sciences, and Radiology.
