Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer has historically been a prime focus of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University.
Breast cancer is a malignancy that develops in the tissues of the breast. It is the most common cancer in women. Each breast has 15-20 sections called lobes, which have smaller sections called lobules. Thin tubes called ducts connect the lobes and lobules. The most common type of breast cancer is ductal cancer, which is found in the cells of the ducts. Cancer that begins in the lobes or lobules is called lobular breast cancer.
There are no early symptoms of breast cancer. Therefore, screening for breast cancer is very important. Women should perform monthly breast self-examination (BSE) beginning at age 20. Since women themselves or their partners detect most breast lumps, BSE serves as a useful screening tool. If any changes or lumps are detected a physician should be seen.
