The Cancer Control Program is an integral part
of the Wake Forest University
Comprehensive Cancer Center. The overall goal of the Cancer Control Program is to create and apply knowledge to prevent and detect cancer and to improve survival and quality of life for those persons who develop cancer. A total of 23 members from nine departments or sections participate in the Cancer Control Program with $8.65 million total in peer-reviewed funding. During the period 2001-2005, the program members have published 206 cancer-related manuscripts.
The specific aims of the Cancer Control Program are: 1) to decrease the incidence and slow the progression of cancer, and 2) to improve the quality of life and increase survival for those who develop cancer. Crossing both aims is our focus on reducing health disparities across the cancer continuum. Within each aim, our research addresses three key stages: discovery, translation, and dissemination. To decrease cancer incidence and slow its progression, our research focuses on: 1) the epidemiology of cancer; 2) behavioral and pharmacological interventions, and 3) early detection. To improve the quality of life and increase survival of those who develop cancer, our research emphasizes: 1) epidemiologic studies of cancer survivors, 2) improving quality of life through symptom management and behavioral interventions, and 3) patterns of care. In all areas of research we are committed to the unique populations of the region (e.g., African-Americans, Native Americans, Latino, low-income, rural).
