Current Research:
James Lovato is a Biostatistician IV and has been a member of the CCCWFU Biostatistics core since 2000. He currently works with clinical, cancer control, and basic science researchers in designing new studies, providing assistance in the development of protocols and grants, analyzing data, and assisting with manuscript development. He has extensive experience writing statistical sections for treatment protocols, including plans for interim monitoring of trial results. James actively provides methodologic support to CCCWFU investigators, performs interim and final data analyses, and collaborates in interpreting and publishing results.
James is also involved in two large national trials to study the effect of diabetes and tight control of blood sugar, and blood pressure on cognitive decline and diabetic retinopathy. The primary aim of ACCORD-MIND is to test whether the rate of cognitive decline and structural brain change in people with diabetes treated with standard care guidelines is different than in people with diabetes treated with intensive care guidelines. This comparison will be made in a sub-sample of 2800 people with diabetes participating in the already funded National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) randomized factorial clinical trial Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD). The purpose of the ACCORD Eye Study is to investigate the effects of the ACCORD interventions (blood sugar control, blood pressure control, and blood lipids control) on eye disease (retinopathy) in ACCORD participants. Retinopathy associated with diabetes is the leading cause of acquired blindness in adults in the US. Participants in the ACCORD Eye Study will have fundus (part of the retina, or back of the eye) photographs taken within two months of randomization and again four years later.
