Pediatric Oncology
Childhood Cancers
The pediatric oncology program provides comprehensive treatment programs for most childhood malignancies. As an active participant in cooperative national trials through the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), pediatric oncology offers the most advanced treatments available. As a national COG resource, our cytogenics laboratory, the first in North Carolina, is engaged in leukemia cell research to find the best treatment methods for children.
Our pediatric cancer patients come from western and west-central North Carolina and from the adjacent regions of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina. They are treated in Brenner Children’s Hospital by a team trained pediatric specialists including pediatric hematologists and oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, and psychologists. A special pediatric oncology conference, which includes these pediatric specialists as well as diagnostic radiologists and pathologists, is regularly held to discuss and coordinate the multidisciplinary care of children with cancer, including their psychosocial and emotional needs. Brenner Children’s Hospital is a state-of-the-art, family-centered facility, that has been recognized by Child magazine as one of then nation’s top pediatric hospitals.
