Breast Cancer Center of Excellence
In 1996, the cross-programmatic nature of breast cancer research at Wake Forest Baptist was formally recognized, and the Breast Cancer Center of Excellence was established to facilitate collaboration among the Cancer Center’s four programs.
The Breast Cancer Center of Excellence takes a multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach involving basic scientists, public health scientists and clinicians. Areas of emphasis at the Center include breast carcinogenesis (what causes cells to mutate into cancer cells), breast cancer risk assessment and prevention, novel modes of breast imaging and quality of life issues for breast cancer patients. The clinical arm is mediated via the Breast Care Center, which has enabled us to initiate a variety of translational research projects.
