Wake Forest Baptist Delivers the Newest Therapies for Patients with Abdominal Cancer

At Wake Forest Baptist, our surgical oncologists have lead the way in developing ground-breaking treatments for abdominal cancer, such as IPHC (Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Chemotherapy), liver resection, and radiofrequency tumor ablation. The experienced surgeons at our Comprehensive Cancer Center also perform complex operations on the esophagus, pancreas, and rectum, and we are continually investigating the latest options for our patients.

IPHC

Since 1993, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has been researching and performing IPHC as an adjunct therapy to surgery in the treatment of abdominal cancer.  IPHC delivers a more concentrated chemotherapy agent directly to the lining of the stomach cavity, putting the chemo drug directly on the cancer cells and sparing healthy organs and tissue. We were one of the first centers to perform the procedure and we have been instrumental in improving and perfecting the technique.

Liver Resection and Implantation of Infusion Pump

We also offer patients with abdominal cancer of the liver the option of liver resection and the implantation of an infusion pump. Read an in-depth article that discusses this procedure, considered to be the gold standard for most patients with metastatic and primary hepatic tumors.

Radiofrequency Tumor Ablation

In addition, we are pleased to offer a relatively new treatment for kidney or liver cancer called radiofrequency tumor ablation. This procedure is associated with remarkably little morbidity and may be performed in combination with systemic chemotherapy. The majority of our patients have required only an overnight stay in the hospital and no serious complications have occurred. We perform the procedure laparoscopically in conjunction with a laparoscopic ultrasound, which allows a more accurate evaluation of the liver and allows for a more accurate placement of the probe.
