Housing
Housing in Winston-Salem is comparatively inexpensive. The median rent asked for vacant for-rent units was $456, the median gross rent was $518 in 2000 (http://www.city-data.com/housing/houses-Winston-Salem-North-Carolina.html).

The MMARS program
In the “Matching Matriculants And Return Students” program, the Graduate School will assign each new student a current student within the program to assist with the transition to Winston-Salem and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This assignment is made for the summer prior to the relocation of the new student.

The Beginning of the Semester
The fall semester typically begins early August. The first few weeks in Graduate School will be filled with administrative and general courses:
· Orientation session & Registration with Human Resources and Graduate School
· Environmental Health & Safety Training
· HIPAA Training
· Computer Training
· Ethics course
The Cancer Biology Department is holding its Annual Retreat in August, which is an excellent opportunity to learn about research opportunities in individual laboratories and to bond with your fellow students. You will choose and begin in your laboratory work for your first rotation after the retreat.
