Education Subcommittee Bylaws and Procedures

Purpose:  To develop programs in coordination with other committees to educate medical center staff, the patient population, and the community regarding important ethical issues.

Educational Program Development:

  • Program ideas can originate within the education subcommittee, be recommended by the Ethics Committee Chairman, referred to the education subcommittee from other subcommittees, be referred to the Ethics Committee from the Chiefs of Professional Services.
  • Any member of the education subcommittee may be contacted regarding an educational program. All programs should be coordinated by the education subcommittee chairpersons in consultation with the chairman of the Ethics Committee.
  • The education subcommittee will maintain a list of education priorities in order to guide program development
  • Programs, including a strategic plan for implementation, will be approved by the education subcommittee, and passed on to the full Ethics Committee for approval.
  • Program implementation should include members of the education subcommittee However, when necessary for educational goals the subcommittee can recruit teachers from outside the Ethics Committee membership.
  • When possible, educational programs should be coordinated with the other subcommittees programs and projects (e.g. seminars, conferences).
  • The subcommittee is not confined to its membership in order to determine need for educational programs. Therefore, in coordination with the Chairman of the Ethics Committee, and the policy and projects subcommittees, the education subcommittee can survey Medical Center staff regarding programs. Other mechanisms for assessment of need in the educational area may also be developed, in collaboration with the Chairman of the Ethics Committee.

Educational Program Coordination:

  • The education subcommittee will be responsible for coordinating programs for the Ethics Committee, the medical and hospital staff, the patient population, the local community, bioethics groups, and other hospital ethics committees.
  • The education subcommittee will assign priorities to programs, and evaluate their implementation and impact
  • Meetings should be held at least monthly
  • Budget needs for the following year should be decided upon and submitted to the Chairman of the Ethics committee by August of each year.
