Annual Residents’ Retreat
Each year, rising PGY-3 residents participate in a retreat with their spouses. The residing co-chiefs plan the retreat. Past topics have included what to look for in a private practice opportunity, negotiating employment contracts, anesthesia collection issues, and financial planning―real-life issues not covered in the academic curriculum. Residents and spouses also enjoy an evening dinner out on the town following the retreat. We appreciate the financial support provided by pharmaceutical companies for this annual retreat.
Report from 2007 Annual CA-2 Retreat
Our annual CA-2 retreat, which addresses the job search and financial planning after graduation, was held on Saturday April 28, 2007. After breakfast, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, two of our department’s faculty started off the day. Dr. Jeff Kelly spoke about “Fundamentals of Personal Financial Management,” and Dr. Phil Scuderi followed with a discussion on “Pension Planning.” Dr. Jay ReVille, a recent Wake Forest graduate and current member of Pinehurst Anesthesia Associates, described “The Interview Trail: Assessing Your First Job Offer.” Baxter Pharmaceuticals then provided lunch. Mr. Gerry Malmo, CLTC, of Holden, Mickey and Mickey, offered strategies for “Choosing Life and Disability Insurance.” Ms. Jennifer Oakes, JD, of Bell, Davis and Pitt, finished off the afternoon with her talk, “Physician Employment Agreements.” In the evening, several residents and their significant-others went out to dinner, courtesy of the department. This year’s retreat was organized by Mandy Froment, MD and Jen Roux, MD, Co-Chief Residents.
