Welcome to the Wake Forest University Department of Anesthesiology! We appreciate your interest in our program, and encourage you to look further into what we feel is a great residency experience. Our department has been built over the years by national and international leaders in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, with the common goal of advancing the field and training the highest quality anesthesiologists possible.
Our residency program has been engineered to provide many diverse learning opportunities. Whether it is using our state-of-the-art simulation lab on a month-long rotation, learning TEE with a fleet of new echo machines, teaching ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block catheter placement to junior residents on a regional anesthesia rotation, or fine-tuning your pediatric anesthesia skills in our PICU sedation suite, there are several opportunities at Wake Forest that go beyond the ordinary.
One of our strengths at Wake Forest is our clinical instruction. There exists here a culture of teaching and active learning that occurs in both the clinical setting and the lecture hall. Faculty here are extremely approachable and unassuming; it is common here to find that important combination of personable, supportive faculty who excel at hands-on teaching but are also recognized, well-published experts in their fields. The department of anesthesia maintains a strong presence throughout the institution and is well respected among other departments.
There are a multitude of opportunities for research and advanced training at Wake Forest. It is easy to get involved in on-going investigations into fields like pain mechanisms, cardiac diastolic dysfunction, regional anesthesia, epidural analgesia pharmacology, or difficult airway management, among many others. Many of us go on to fellowship training, with several each year deciding to stay at Wake Forest for advanced training. We have an extensive connection with previous residency graduates throughout the country who are frequently looking for new partners.
The camaraderie at Wake Forest is excellent, and you’ll find all sorts of people with diverse interests here. We also pride ourselves in achieving both academic excellence and facilitating outside interests, with a schedule that allows enough time to take advantage of what North Carolina has to offer. Winston-Salem is located within a few hours of the mountains and the beach, and many of the residents here are avid outdoorsy people, cyclists, anglers, aviators, surfers, and backpackers, among other things.
We invite you to look into our program as a place to start your career as an excellent anesthesiologist. The opportunities that exist here are outstanding, and with leadership that focuses on balancing academic achievement with first-rate clinical instruction, Wake Forest will be one of the country's top departments in which to train for a long time to come.
