Tobin Named to Succeed Roy as Chair |  Dean William Applegate has named Joseph R. Tobin, MD, Professor and Section Head of Pediatric Anesthesiology and Critical Care, to succeed Raymond C. Roy, PhD, MD, as chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. Joining the department in 1993, Dr. Tobin has been a very active member of the University community serving in a variety of departmental and institutional capacities. Dr. Tobin is board certified in Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, and Pediatric Critical Care.

 James C. Eisenach, MD, has been selected as the Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesiology, the journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists with a circulation of 40,000. He is the FM James III Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chair for Research at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, with a clinical specialty in obstetric anesthesia, and laboratory and clinical research focusing on understanding mechanisms of chronic pain and identifying new treatments.

4 The Anesthesia Initiative on Aging (AIA) is an educational initiative led by Leanne Groban, M.D. that seeks to ensure the provision of appropriate and individualized perioperative care to the growing number of older Americans |
 The Anesthesiology department at WFUSM, in conjunction with the Geriatrics department, was awarded the Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program (GSR) grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation and the American Geriatrics Society. This two-year award is an initiative designed to better prepare surgical and other specialty medical residents to care for elderly patients.
Residents will be taught by a multidisciplinary team in the form of lectures, case-studies, journal club (Geriatric Fluid Rounds), web-based modules, and simulation. Some of the topics addressed include: cardiovascular aging, postoperative delirium vs. dementia, polypharmacy, trauma, preoperative optimization, and acute and chronic pain management in the older adult.
The goal of the AIA is to improve residents’ understanding of the physiologic changes of aging, and the recommended considerations and modifications of anesthetic technique, in order to help contribute to an ever-improving outcome for the geriatric-surgical population. The geriatric patient is not simply an older adult, but rather, a truly different physiologic entity!

4 Groban Presents Diastolic Dysfunction Research at the American Heart Association’s 59th Annual Fall Conference
|
 Leanne Groban, MD, presented her findings of how estrogen depletion affects diastolic dysfunction at the AHA’s 59th Annual Fall Conference for High Blood Pressure Research. Her research utilized a newly developed rat model, specifically designed to study the affects of decreasing estrogen levels on the post-menopausal heart. Diastolic dysfunction in more common in post-menopausal women and is frequently associated with hypertension. Groban found that estrogen depletion exacerbates the progression of diastolic dysfunction. More.
