Endourology/Laparoscopy Fellowship
This is a one-year fellowship. Candidates must have completed an accredited urology residency in the United States or Canada and be board eligible. They receive a junior faculty appointment at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Fellows are instructed in all aspects of endourology including percutaneous access, percutaneous nephrostolithotomy, shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopic stone removal, antegrade and retrograde management of patients with ureteral strictures, ureteropelvic junction obstruction and tumors of the renal collecting system and ureter.
Fellows also participate in complex open surgical stone and ureteral reconstructive operations. They are exposed to laparoscopic renal and adrenal surgery. Inanimate laparoscopic training models and a monthly porcine laboratory are used to foster the development of skills in this area. State of the art technology is available for the accomplishment of the aforementioned goals. Fellows evaluate patients with their mentor and also in an independent clinic. There is also an independent operative experience for selected cases. The foundations of metabolic evaluation and medical therapy for the prevention of nephrolithiasis are taught. Clinical and basic science research is conducted in an NIH-funded laboratory.
