Prospective House Staff

Appointments

Appointments are made on the basis of past performance and references. While not absolutely required, interviews are desirable. First year appointments are designated in accordance with the National Resident Matching Program.

Appointments are made without regard to race, religion, sex or national origin.

Drug Screening

If you are accepted into a training program, the beginning of your training is contingent upon successful completion of a drug screening test.

Professional Liability

House staff is provided with liability insurance to cover only the assigned, supervised activities of each house officer’s residency program. Professional liability insurance coverage begins with the date of appointment.

Research and Clinical Fellowships

Research and clinical fellowships may be arranged through direct communication with the Chief of Service of the appropriate program.

Health Insurance

A health insurance policy is provided through the hospital for house officers. (see benefits)

Disability Insurance

Long term disability insurance is provided after 3 months of service. This coverage pays 80% of your salary should you become disabled. (see benefits)

Dental Reimbursement

A dental reimbursement plan is available. (see benefits)

Life Insurance

Life insurance is provided after 3 months of service for all house staff. The initial amount is equal to the individual’s annual salary rounded to the next thousand dollars. Additional life insurance may be purchased through payroll deduction.

Vacations

Vacations are given at a time agreeable with the Chief of Service.

On-Call Rooms

On-call rooms and a separate lounge are furnished.

Licensure

All physicians must be licensed by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of North Carolina. The Board has discretionary licensure agreements with most states.

Foreign Medical Graduates

Foreign medical graduates must have passed the necessary exams for the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Additional information may be obtained by visiting the ECFMG Web site.

Immunization Requirements

Immunization requirements will be sent to house officers upon notification of appointment.

Hawthorne Inn and Conference Center

The AAA 3-diamond Hawthorne Inn and Conference Center is owned by Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. While interviewing, prospective house staff enjoy a special rate and food discount in the Bayberry Restaurant located in the hotel.

The Hawthorne Inn offers many amenities, including free shuttle service between the hotel and medical center, free parking, fitness facility, laundry facilities, dry cleaning, complimentary continental breakfast, complimentary copy of USA Today (Monday through Friday) and a full service restaurant and lounge.
