Sports Medicine Clinics

Sports Medicine Clinics at the Family Practice Center – This clinic occurs once weekly in the Family Practice Center.  Patients are seen for sports and orthopedic problems.  This clinic has its own radiology area, casting application, computerized patient exercise protocols, braces and other support devices.
 
Sports Medicine Clinics at the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Center (CORC) – This facility is a sprawling 72,000 sq. ft. enterprise that houses an interdisciplinary approach to musculoskeletal health and well-being.  It houses its own radiology area, casting application (with a cast technician), and ready consultation with numerous experts in the field of musculoskeletal medicine.
 
Wake Forest University Student Health Center – A fellow and a faculty member care for students in the general population with orthopedic problems.  Patients are referred from other health care providers in the Student Health Center.
 
Wake Forest University Training Room – The sports medicine fellows and faculty provide medical and orthopedic care for athletes and staff of the WFU Athletics Department, a prominent NCAA Division I program.
 
NC School of Arts Training Room – A nationally-renown pre-professional school for those pursuing careers in the arts, training rooms here provides a tremendous experience caring for high-level ballet and modern dancers and other performing artists.  The fellows will also assist in coverage of performances throughout the year.
 
Winston-Salem State University Training Room – The sports medicine fellows provide a weekly training room for the athletic injuries at this Division II university.

Family Medicine Continuity Clinics – One to two half-days per week are spent in the Family Practice Center.  The fellows' continuity clinics allow for the practice of primary care medicine and sports medicine in an independent fashion, with immediate availability of a preceptor when needed.  This allows the fellow to maintain his/her primary skills and fosters further development in his/her chosen field

WFU Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs – The fellow supervises exercise treadmills on participants and gains experience in the assessment and monitoring of adult fitness programs and research
 
Assistance in the Operating Room – A small amount of time is allowed for exposure to operative orthopedics in order to obtain full understanding of outpatient and inpatient orthopedics surgery procedures.  Elective time may be spent in this area as well.

Electives - Electives in adolescent medicine, anatomy, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, cardiology, nutrition, radiology, rheumatology, physical medicine, physical therapy, and numerous other areas are available to expand on a fellow's area of interest or improve an area of weakness.  These usually occur one half-day per week for 1-3 months.  The fellows are encouraged to utilize the many resources available in the school of medicine and the university.
