All interested students, residents, fellows and faculty are welcome to attend the below conferences.
Mandatory Conferences for Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellows
Duke Bronchoscopy Course for starting fellows. (1st year and IB fellow). One day intensive hands-on introduction to bronchoscopy presented by nationally known faculty from Duke, University of North Carolina, and Wake Forest University School of Medicine as well as from other academic institutions. This is held the first week of July. This course includes computer simulation and animal laboratory experiences to teach the new fellows the basics of bronchoscopy.
Summer Core Conference series (12-1 PM, Mon-Wed). This conference occurs during the initial 2-3 months of fellowship and aims to cover the sentinel issues in pulmonary and critical care medicine important for the first year residents. The conference serves as a “refresher” and “update” for the upper level residents and includes discussion of cases and pathophysiology of disease. One conference weekly is a basic science/research “chalkboard” talk on the scientific background for ongoing research in the Section.
Monday Pulmonary Core Conference (12-1 PM). This venue is administrated jointly by the program director and the chief fellows and includes a rotating schedule of small group discussion of radiology/pathology cases, journal articles, board review materials and core lectures not covered in the summer
series.
Wednesday Pulmonary Grand Rounds (12-1 PM). This conference is our formal CME venue that includes internal and external visiting speakers. Both clinical (state-of-the-art reviews) and research (both clinical and bench) topics are included. Approximately 10-20% of speakers are external expert speakers recruited for visiting professorships from national and international academic institutions. Fellows prepare formal presentations once per year.
Friday Critical Care Conference (11-12 AM). Multidisciplinary conference that is administrated through the Anesthesia Critical Care Section and our sister Critical Care Medicine fellowship. Topics range from core conferences early in the year to morbidity/mortality case conferences and internal/external speakers on current ICU topics. Fellows prepare formal presentations once per year.

Thoracic Oncology Program (TOP) Conference (Tues 12-1 PM). Multidisciplinary venue where thoracic malignancies are discussed by our Section, pathology, thoracic surgery and medical/radiation oncology. Wake Forest University is a funded Comprehensive Cancer Center with extensive resources and an active clinical research program.
General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) conference (Wed 12-1 PM). Review of current topics in clinical research with emphasis on projects ongoing in our GCRC. Wake Forest is involved in many large NIH funded cardiovascular, diabetes and geriatric trials (Pepper Center), as well as our large asthma programs. This conference highlights major findings in clinical research.
Genomics Research Conference (Tues 4-5 PM). This conference covers a wide range of topics related to complex diseases including asthma, atopy, diabetes, asthma, prostate cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Research faculty from the Center and external expert visiting professors present findings from clinical, translational and bench research in this venue.
Internal Medicine Grand Rounds (Thurs 8-9 AM). This conference is coordinated by the Department of Medicine and is attended by all faculty and residents, both IM and subspecialty residents.
Obstetrics & Gynecology Grand Rounds (Mon 5-6 PM). State-of-the art review of clinical medicine coordinated by the OB/Gyn Department; fellows are encouraged to attend for critical illness topics in this patient population.
