Brief Summary of Research: The focus of my research has been the neurobiology of drugs of abuse, including cocaine, heroin and alcohol. Recent work has evaluated changes in the motivation of rats to self-administer cocaine following pharmacological pre-treatments or neurotoxic lesions. One goal is to develop animal models which reflect specific aspects of the addiction process and to investigate the underlying neurobiology through collaborations with labs that examine changes in brain chemistry (Sara Jones, James Smith), genomics and proteomics (Kent Vrana).
