Diabetic Foot

  • Diabetic foot ulcers are thought to be due, in part, to the peripheral autonomic neuropathy that accompanies diabetes and the concomitant loss of nutritional perfusion. Laser Doppler studies of normal and diabetic feet reveal a loss of microvascular control in the very low frequency range that is exacerbated by cooling. Studies are underway to develop hardware and software to improve the ability to detect abnormalities in autonomic control indicating peripheral microneuropathies that precede diabetic foot ulcers. To date, it has been determined that even the early stages of diabetes are characterized by deficits in the very low frequency component of microvascular perfusion as measured by spectral analysis of the laser Doppler perfusion measurements.

Musculoskeletal Oncology

  • Various research projects are focused on areas of musculoskeletal oncology including: 1) tumors masquerading as hematomas, 2) evaluation of limb salvage reconstruction, 3) treatment options for pigmented villonodular synovitis, 4) HLA sensitization following major cortical allograft bone procedures, and 5) review of recurrence rates for biopsied sarcomas.
