7-Year Career Pathway - Research Fellowship
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine offers a residency position for a medical school graduate interested in pursuing a career in academic Orthopaedic medicine. This 7 year program begins with a two year research fellowship followed by the standard Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center five year Orthopaedic Surgery residency. After successful completion of the two year research fellowship, this resident will be awarded a NIH Physician Scientist Certification. Entry into the standard Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center 5-year Orthopaedic Surgery is automatic.
In the first two years the research fellow will be guided by a Clinical Mentor in Orthopaedic Surgery and a Basic Science Mentor. Duties include the design and execution of clinical and basic science research protocols, submitting abstracts and grant applications, attending weekly research planning meetings, and participation in Orthopaedic journal clubs and morning conference. The fellow will have no ward or call responsibilities during the 2 year research fellowship.
Salary for the first two years is commensurate with NIH guidelines for postdoctoral fellows, as is the requirement for U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. Travel funds are available for the fellow to present their research findings at meetings.
