Resident Clinics
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has established an outpatient clinic to be used exclusively by the orthopaedic residents to enhance their pre- and post-operative patient care experience. The clinics are fully staffed with nurses, patient assistants, a receptionist, transcription support, etc. Each resident designates the number of patients scheduled to be seen. Essentially, the resident clinics have all the same amenities as the clinics run by an attending physician.
At the beginning of the third post-graduate year, each resident will be assigned one (specified) half-day of clinic responsibility to be scheduled every week. The resident will continue to maintain this clinic throughout the residency training period. Additionally, the resident will spend one half-day each week seeing patients with an orthopaedic attending physician.
This system is designed to provide a better balance between surgical exposure and pre- and post-operative patient care experience. It will also allow for the development of patient/physician rapport and provide continuity of care to the patient.
