Intramural Research Support Committee
Introduction
The Intramural Research Support Committee (IRSC) is composed of 22 faculty members with a wide range of clinical and basic research experience. Members are appointed annually by the Dean for three year terms. The principal responsibility of the IRSC is the scientific review of intramural research grant applications from the faculty and the review of medical student fellowship applications. In addition, the IRSC provides ad-hoc review of other School research grants, such as Women's Health, Cross Campus Collaborative Grants and special research initiatives.
There are three types of research applications that are reviewed by the IRSC.
- Regular Intramural Research Grants. These grants, up to $20,000 provide funds for new faculty to establish a research program; established faculty to continue their research program operating through short periods without extramural funding; and all faculty to obtain pilot data in a new area of research that has high probability for new extramural funding.
- Interim Funding Program. This program is designed specifically for faculty who have an ongoing extramural grant (e.g., NIH, NSF, Dept. of Defense, American Cancer Society, etc.), but whose funding has been interrupted by an unsuccessful competitive renewal. The size of the award will depend on individual circumstances, but does not exceed $45,000 for 12 months.
- Review of grants to be funded from other institutional sources (Departments, programs, etc.). The IRSC will provide a scientific critique to Chairmen or program directors who are considering funding from their own resources.
