Institute for Regenerative Medicine Receives Defense Department Grant

Announced at a press conference in Washington, D.C., the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine has successfully won a bid to co-lead an $85 million federally funded Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM). AFIRM will be dedicated to repairing battlefield injuries through the use of regenerative medicine. This story received significant coverage, shown in the  Winston-Salem Journal, Science Magazine, and a FOX 8 segment that aired on 15 affiliates nationwide.

AED/CPR Training for Teachers

The Medical Center recently gave 16 teachers with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools lifesaving American Heart Association AED/CPR training. This story was covered by both Fox 8 and WXII.

Charley Horses

Dr. John Spangler was quoted in a story on ABC.com exploring the mysterious pain of “charley horses.”

Charity Care

The Triad Business Journal printed a story regarding the nationwide increase in charity care and how the Medical Center’s increase has reflected this trend. Greg Bray, NCBH controller, was interviewed.

Auction Bonds

Triad Business Journal reporter Michelle Rash interviewed Doug Nelson for a story about auction bonds in the health care field. Nelson explained how the Medical Center is dealing with this situation.

Davie County Hospital

An update on the Davie Hospital C.O.N. applications recently appeared on WXII News 12.

Research on Cocaine Addiction

There has been significant coverage of research from Dr. Mike Nader’s lab on cocaine addiction. The work has been covered across the nation in both print and broadcast media outlets, including U.S. News and World Report (HealthDay News) and UPI.

First Chief Scientist to FDA

Dr. Frank M. Torti was appointed to principal deputy commissioner and first chief scientist to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This was covered by Winston-Salem Journal, UPI, WXII, and the Triad Business Journal.

Genetic Testing Bill

Dr. David Herrington was quoted in a story in Congress Now regarding a genetic testing bill that has recently been sent to the president’s desk. The bill would ban discrimination based on genetic testing.

Domestic HIV/AIDS program

Two WFUBMC researchers wrote editorials about President Bush’s proposed FY ’09 budget and the effect this would have on the domestic program for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Dr. Scott Rhodes wrote an editorial for the Winston-Salem Chronicle and Lynn Cochran, R.N., wrote for the Winston-Salem Journal.

HIV Prevention Program

Dr. Liz Arnold’s research on runaway youth programs and how to help them avoid high-risk sex and substance abuse, appeared in POZ Magazine.

Komen Dessert Auction

The Medical Center raised more than $5,400 for Komen NC Triad Race for the Cure at a dessert auction held on April 19 at Hanes Mall. The event was promoted on WGHP Fox 8 during five live shots, on WSJS with Candid Jones, WXII Noon Show and in the Scene and Heard column of the Winston-Salem Journal.

Noon Show

Dr. Andrea Fernandez appeared on the WXII Noon Show to discuss hysterectomies for women and the alternatives that are available.

Healthy Habits

Dr. Joseph Grzywacz was quoted in a Forbes.com article about his research on work-place flexibility and how this impacts your health.
