2007 Mountain Medical Meeting
This CME activity, targeted to family practitioners and general internists, is designed as a review/update of selected areas of medicine. Each lecture at this year's meeting began with at least one case, which the speaker went through as part of his/her presentation. By participating, participants should increase their knowledge of the subjects presented and then be able to apply that knowledge to specific patient management problems. This year's emphasis was devoted to the areas of dermatology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, rheumatology, and women's health.

Anticoagulation Certificate Program – May 2007
Anticoagulation Certificate Renewal Program – May 2007
Hypertension Certificate Program
Hypertension Certificate Renewal Program

The Northwest and Greensboro AHEC’s have collaborated with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy since the mid-1990’s to develop and deliver highly-successful pharmacy certificate programming.  The certification program process requires an extensive time commitment, providing between 35 and 40 credit hours.  The didactic portion of the program (approximately 7 hrs) is offered online or by CD-ROM, allowing participants to learn at their own pace.  The programs also include a self-study set of readings, a pre-test, a case-based post-test, six patient interview/work-ups, a clinical services implementation plan, and attendance at nine hours of live sessions, including a skills lab and two case presentations sessions.  Annual renewal programs are available for all certificates. For certificates offered in diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and asthma go to the Greensboro AHEC website at:  http://www.gahec.org, or you may contact Jennifer Epperley via e-mail jennifer.epperley@mosescone.com. Certificates are offered in anticoagulation (available every April) and hypertension (available every December). Online registration is available for the currently active certificate programs only.

Counseling for Change: An Online Tobacco Cessation Course
Northwest AHEC offers a tobacco cessation course for those healthcare professionals who are counseling their patients to quit smoking.  Based upon a model of behavior change, the smoking cessation materials were originally developed with a generous grant from the Duke Endowment as a method to help reduce Forsyth County's infant mortality rate-focusing on women of childbearing age.  The printed materials received such positive feedback from the Downtown Health Plaza staff and other Forsyth County community Ob/Gyn’s that an investment was made to allow accessibility of the course and all resource/toolkits through our website.

Culturally Competent Care
Northwest AHEC is pleased to have partnered with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) as it developed and tested its Cultural Competency Modules. Northwest AHEC played a role in assisting with the recruitment of family physicians to test the modules and served as one of six test sites. The modules are intended to equip family physicians and other healthcare professionals with the competencies that will enable them to treat effectively an increasingly diverse U.S. population.  The U.S. DHSS Office of Minority Health website will collect registration information for the issuance of appropriate continuing education credit.
