The Joint Commission addresses health information literacy as a patient safety issue.  Their website includes streaming videos, a link to their 2007 White Paper, “What did the Doctor Say,” statements, reports, suggestions for actions, and many other resources.

IHA’s HELP, or Health Education Literacy Program addresses both issues of lack of basic reading, listening, and speaking skills in English, as well as that of navigating through the healthcare system, through the provision of a specific curriculum.  The site also provides extensive background on illiteracy and its impact on health, and links to many other resources.

(Length - 6 & ½ minutes)

 

AMA Foundation – There are two video options from the AMA, varying in both length and format depending on your Internet connection.  They have their 2007 Health Literacy Program VideoHealth literacy and patient safety: Help patients understand” (Length - 23 minutes) and the 2001 Health Literacy Program Video "Low health literacy: You can't tell by looking" (Length - 18 minutes)

 

Harvard Health Literacy Program- In Plain Language
This video/DVD was developed for medical and public health professionals interested in learning about adult literacy in the US. Included are testimonials about the challenges of literacy demands found within health care settings.
