The NC AHEC Spanish Language and Cultural Training Initiative is a unique opportunity to increase access and improve quality of healthcare services offered to Spanish-speaking families in North Carolina. Through a three-year grant from The Duke Endowment, the NC AHEC Program will collaborate with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health and Health Sciences Library to provide a comprehensive statewide approach to Spanish language and cultural training. As part of this initiative, Spanish language books and audiovisuals have been purchased for each of the AHEC Libraries. 


What resources are available?

Where are the Spanish language resources housed? 
Spanish healthcare books and audiovisuals are available at the three Northwest AHEC base libraries.

 

Who may use these materials? 
Materials may be checked out by any health care personnel in the Northwest AHEC region. 

How much does it cost to check out materials? 
There is no charge for borrowing materials - just the UPS charge to return them.

How do I order materials? 
You may call one of the Northwest AHEC libraries to borrow the materials. 

 

How long can the materials be checked out? 
Books and audiovisuals may be checked out for 2 weeks. 

 

Do I need anything to check out these materials? 
Yes. You need to bring your driver's license with you so that we can make a copy for our records during the time you are borrowing the materials.

Childhood Immunization: Kate Comes Back - 10 min - This program focuses on the importance of childhood immunizations as part of a child's continuing health. Viewers learn about types of immunizations required for children, how often they are needed and some of the common myths.

Communicating Effectively Through an Interpreter - For Health Care Providers - 28 min - Tape is designed to help providers in: choosing an appropriate interpreter; recognizing the signs of professional and unprofessional interpretation; and guiding an untrained interpreter. W 62 C734 1998

Healthy Pregnancy for You and Your Baby - 13 min - While following a variety of women through their pregnancies, this video explains the emotional and physical effects to be expected. Future mothers are advised on the importance of regular prenatal care and the development of the fetus is explained. Immunizations: What Lily Learned - 15 min. Viewers follow a mother and child through the immunization process. The necessity of shots when the child is 2, 4 and 6 months old is stressed, as well as the importance of keeping the immunization record up-to-date. Road to Quality Migrant Health - 30 min - The importance of sensitivity and respect for lifestyles and cultures. - WA 390 W275r 1987

 

Roadblocks to Good Health - Put a Little Health in Your Life - 15 min - The
use and abuse of drugs and alcohol can be major stumbling blocks in the path to a healthy lifestyle. This program illustrates the destructive nature of addictive substances, especially for pregnant women, and demonstrates useful ways to start the road to recovery. WM 270 O14 1995

 

STDS: Straight Talk - 20 min - By witnessing the emotional accounts of young people who have contacted an STD, the viewer will learn that these diseases can be disguised yet powerful, both physically and emotionally. The program following two teenagers, one male and female, as they visit their local health clinic and undergo STD testing. The exam is thoroughly explained and symptoms are illustrated. T.B. Strikes Again - 14 min - Using animation and live action, the program introduces tuberculosis, differentiates between active and inactive, and also describes the common cause of the disease. The video goes one step further and explains the symptoms and the importance of treating the disease to prevent its spread. WF 200 T885.65 1994
