Basic PubMED

 

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this class, the student will be able to:

  • Connect to PubMed http://pubmed.gov
  • Demonstrate the use of MeSH Browser: subheadings, major topic headings & the explode function for subject headings.  
  • Understand concept of controlled vocabulary and the principle of choosing the most specific subject term that represents the desired concept. 
  • Demonstrate use of textwords (keywords) when an appropriate subject heading (MeSH heading) does not exist. 
  • Understand the functions of the important tabs on the PubMed home page: Limits, History, Clipboard, Details.
  • Demonstrate a simple search after choosing subject headings from MeSH Browser.
  • Demonstrate the same search in Clinical Queries (Evidence-Based Medicine).
  • Demonstrate limiting the simple search to English, Human, Review articles, last 5 years etc.
  • Understand the various display options: Summary, Abstract, Citation plus  sort & text formats:
  • Choose several refs & place on clipboard.  Go to Clipboard and remove one ref.
  • Choose several refs & email them to yourself in abstracts format & text format.
  • Demonstrate how to bring up the full text of the free full text articles (from PubMed Central or other free sources)
  • Be familiar with six major functions on the left sidebar of PubMed: Clinical Queries, Clincial Alerts, My NCBI, Clinical Trials, Consumer Health, PubMed Central.

     Continuing from the skills learned above, learn how to view abstracts and download or print full-text articles from PubMed. Time: approx. 4 minutes
