Course Objectives
Upon completion of this class, the student will be able to:

  • Show how to search for keywords in an article title. 
  • Know the format for doing an author search.
  • Show how to search for words or phrases in fields using the Preview/ Index tab.
  • Be able to limit to subsets within PubMed: Nursing Journals, Complementary Medicine, Dental Journals, AIDS, Bioethics, etc. 
  • Demonstrate complex searches (using the HISTORY tab): combining using multiple “ORs” & "ANDs".
  • Be familiar with some Evidence-Based Medicine searching:
    • Demonstrate limiting a search to Clinical Trials and Meta-analyses.
    • Demonstrate evidence-based medicine search filters in Clinical Queries.
  • Find a specific reference with incomplete information using the Single Citation Matcher on the sidebar.
  • Locate a journal by using one word from the title in the Journals Database.
  • Demonstrate finding materials written for the patient or family on Cystic Fibrosis from MedlinePlus (Consumer Health on the left sidebar).
  • Demonstrate how to find a clinical trial for breast cancer in North Carolina (ClinicalTrials.gov on the left sidebar)
  • Explore the Clinical Alerts feature on the left sidebar.
  • Explain the significance of a clinical alert.
  • Know how to search a topic within PubMed Central.
  • Explain that PubMed Central is a fraction (the free online fraction) of the medical literature
