The Alphabet Soup of CE Credits!

Northwest AHEC provides a variety of continuing education credits to help you meet the CE expectations of your respective profession.  However, all of these CE acronyms are like an alphabet soup! Where can you go to find out the most current information about CE expectations for your profession?  This article provides some guidance.

First, if one of North Carolina’s occupational boards governs your practice, then the web site for that particular occupational board is the best place for current information about CE requirements (e.g. number of hours, types of courses, specified content of courses, etc.).  In the following chart, we have highlighted the web sites of state occupational boards for selected health professions. Second, many professional organizations have requirements, recommendations, and/or guidelines for CE, often as part of their credentialing process.  We have listed web sites of selected professional organizations. Due to space limitations, we have not listed all of these organizations.

Northwest AHEC offers relevant credits for each CE activity depending upon its intended target audience.  Therefore, we do not offer all types of credits for every CE activity. To determine specific credits provided for any CE activity, consult the brochure. Generally, a CE credit of completion for one contact hour represents 60 minutes of instruction.  There are exceptions, e.g. a CNE/nursing contact hour represents 50 minutes of instruction. One continuing education unit (CEU) is equal to 10 contact hours.

Continuing education requirements for your specific profession are subject to change.  Please visit these sites periodically to remain informed about your profession’s requirements.
