Oncology Specialty Residency

WFUBMC offers an ASHP-accreditated, one-year, specialty residency in oncology at a NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The residency is designed to provide the resident with a broad range of hematology and oncology experiences in a progressive environment committed to pharmaceutical care and education.  These experiences combine learning opportunities in a multidisciplinary setting for both inpatients and outpatients. One position is available each year.

Fundamentals

Clinical experiences

Clinical experiences are available in each of the following patient populations:

·        Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) - required 

·        Leukemia - required

·        Medical Oncology - required

·        Pediatric Oncology

·        Gynecology Oncology

·        Ambulatory Hematology and Oncology Clinic - longitudinal

·        Pain Management

·        Palliative Care

·        Nutrition Support

·        Infectious Diseases

Rotations

Members of the pharmacy staff participate in daily patient care rounds, therapeutic drug monitoring, patient education, providing drug information, and in-service education.

Flexibility allows the resident to tailor experiences to meet their individual interests and career goals.

      ·    One month rotations which could be made into blocks of multiple months

      ·    In July, the resident will spend time learning the order entry and distribution system for chemotherapy patients

      ·    December will be left open as a research and administration month

·      Remaining 10 rotations are broken into 3 required rotations and 7 elective rotations

      ·    All rotations precepted by qualified clinical specialists

Presentations

Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program.  Presentation opportunities include:

      ·    Pharmacotherapy CE Program

      ·    Journal Club

      ·    Case Presentations

·     Didactic Lecture at Campbell University School of Pharmacy

·     Staff Development presentations

      ·    Inservices on rotations

      ·    Project Presentation at the Southeastern Residency Conference

·     Presentation at a national meeting such as ASHP Midyear, HOPA

Precepting

By precepting students, the oncology resident will have the opportunity to refine their teaching skills and further deepen their own clinical knowledge base.

      ·    WFUBMC is a rotation site for students from the University of North Carolina and Campbell University Schools of Pharmacy (approximately 160 student months per year)

      ·    Precepting responsibilities available on many rotations

Projects

      ·    The oncology resident will complete:

-         a minimum of one independent research project

-         a manuscript for publication      

      ·    Mentoring provided by pharmacy preceptors
