Jean Bailey Brooks, M.D. '44 was the only woman in her medical school class. Twenty-nine years later she became the first woman president of the Medical Alumni Association (MAA). She was instrumental in the formation of the Dean's Division leadership giving club. Twice she has been recipient of the MAA's Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Brooks also is one of the School of Medicine's longstanding benefactors. With her late husband, Taylor Brooks, M.D., she has endowed the Brooks Scholar in Academic Medicine Program. The fund currently totals almost $2 million to support junior faculty in both research and teaching.

"It allowed me time for research that otherwise would have been difficult to undertake," said former Brooks Scholar Deirdre Robinson Bland, M.D., associate professor and head of the Section on General Gynecology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "Success is always easier in an environment of caring and support. I am grateful to Dr. Brooks for her generosity."
