Current Research:
Over the past 25 years the number of Americans with diabetes mellitus (DM) has more than doubled. This has also correlated with increases in diabetic complications, including atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and kidney failure. In the United States, diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), accounting for 44% of new cases. Epidemiologic evidence has shown familial clustering of diabetic nephropathy (DN), suggesting the contribution of genetic factors. Genome wide linkage scans for DN have shown a major susceptibility locus maps to chromosome 18q in Turkish, Pima Indian, African American, Mexican American and Caucasian American families. I am currently looking at genes in this region, and their relationship to DM-ESRD through sequencing and candidate gene analysis in Caucasian Americans and African Americans.
