Current Research: Dr. Crouse is a past recipient of the Preventive Cardiology Academic Award from NHLBI and is director of the Wake Forest University Preventive Cardiology Program. The Preventive Cardiology Program involves clinical activities (the Clinical Lipid Center, a tertiary referral clinic for difficult to manage dyslipidemia patients), research, and teaching. Dr. Crouse has had continuous NIH funding for his research for over 15 years. Research interests include lipids, nutrition, and interrelationships of atherosclerosis of and risk factors for cerebrovascular, peripheral vascular, and coronary artery disease with an emphasis on non-invasive imaging of vascular disease. Dr. Crouse’s important academic contributions include establishment of use of B-mode ultrasound for quantification of subclinical atherosclerosis in epidemiologic studies and clinical trials, and identification of statin treatment as a means of reducing risk of stroke. Current NIH-funded research includes (1) an epidemiologic evaluation of ability of MRI to identify carotid plaque in patients with and without coronary artery disease, and (2) a clinical trial of effects of intense diabetes control to reduce cardiovascular events. The Preventive Cardiology Program also hosts a yearly Continuing Medical Education program, the Chetola Conference, devoted to dyslipidemia and vascular disease prevention.
