The Molecular Medicine Graduate Program is an ideal place for the PhD portion of your MD/PhD training here at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The emphasis of our department is to train scientists in translational research. As medicine has become more complex and our understanding of disease processes have become more intricate, the need for skilled scientists in the medical field grows. The discussion of ideas and application of techniques between these two highly focused professions is essential for further improvement in medical care and quality of life of patients.

The medical school course work completed in a student’s first two years at Wake Forest University fulfills some of the graduate program’s course requirements. This modification allows MD/PhD students to generally finish course work in the first graduate school year, allowing for more laboratory time and an accelerated research course. Choosing a thesis lab and beginning research early is also facilitated by lab rotations in the summers before graduate school matriculation. Ideally, Molecular Medicine MD/PhD students start research in their thesis labs while they begin their graduate school course work.

With a variety of MD, PhD and MD/PhD researchers with whom to train, Molecular Medicine program offers many disease focused research projects. In fact, many of the Wake Forest MD/PhD students are a part of the Molecular Medicine Program.
