One important aspect of the pathogenesis of hypertension concerns the understanding of the role of hormones in the control of blood pressure and vascular reactivity.  Research approaches in our laboratory entail understanding the contribution of the renin angiotensin system to pregnancy induced hypertension.  In addition, our laboratory is interested in the cardiovascular protective role of estrogen and its interaction with the renin-angiotensin system. The laboratory uses pharmacologic and physiologic techniques to study vascular reactivity, biochemical methods to measure tissue levels of neuroendocrine hormones, and molecular techniques to study the regulation of the key proteins.  These studies are gaining in importance as new health care approaches focus on disease prevention processes.
