Center for Excellence in Hypertension and Vascular Disease

Carlos M. Ferrario, M.D.
Basic research in the Hypertension and Vascular Disease Center seeks to advance understanding of disease processes at the organ level. Our research on the molecular and biochemical physiology of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) and vasodilator hormones complements our investigation of the mechanisms responsible for the development of high blood pressure and atherosclerosis in humans.
New research in genetic factors and receptors allows for the design of novel drugs to counteract the processes accounting for diseases of the heart and the blood vessels and the rapid transfer of findings to the bedside. Innovative research and discoveries by our scientists in this field are documented in the worldwide medical literature. In addition, our scientists continue to have one of the longest records of funding from the National Heart, Lung, Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, a testimony to their innovative approach to the investigation of cardiovascular diseases.
