Current Research:

My research project addresses whether the direct effects of estrogen on the vasculature may contribute to gender differences in hypertension. Using mRen2.Lewis congenic rats, a model of hypertension which displays estrogen sensitivity, we will determine the effect of estrogen on vascular reactivity using isolated aortic rings and perfused mesenteric vessels. In addition, we will determine which estrogen receptor subtypes (α, β, and newly discovered estrogen receptor, GPR30) contribute to these effects. Additional studies will address the expression of vascular estrogen receptors and the mechanism by which estrogen alters smooth muscle cell contractility.
