The physiology and pharmacology program at Wake Forest was attractive because of the versatility of laboratories one can join once here.  I was able to experience exciting rotations in the Hypertension and Vascular Research Center as well as the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine.  Upon joining Dr. Tallant’s lab I have been allowed to work on cutting edge research involving our peptide of interest, Angiotensin (1-7), effects on vascular injury.

Current Research:

My research while working in Dr. Tallant’s lab has focused on the effects of Ang-(1-7) on the migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC).  VSMC migration and proliferation are critical for the development of restenosis, the development of neointima, after vascular injury.  Previous studies by Dr. Tallant have shown that neointima formation is reduced by Ang-(1-7) by its antiproliferative effects on VSMC.  I am interested in determing if Ang-(1-7) has antimigratory effects on VSMC and the molecular mechanisms involved in the process.  I am also interested in determining the molecular mechanisms to how Ang-(1-7) reduces proliferation of VSMC.
