“I chose to pursue my PhD at Wake Forest University in the program of Molecular Medicine due to its interdisciplinary range that strives to combine science and clinical medicine in pursuit of answers to diseases.  I chose Dr. Brosnihan’s laboratory in the Hypertension Center due to the collaborative efforts of the center and their drive to push students to become independent thinkers and good scientists while still providing a nurturing environment for learning.”

Current Research:

Working in Dr. Bridget Brosnihan's lab in the Hypertension Center, I have been assessing the distribution of Ang-(1-7) and its synthetic enzyme ACE2. The peptide Ang-(1-7) is part of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System, which regulates blood pressure. It has been shown in previous research in our lab that Ang-(1-7) levels increase in the urine levels of pregnant human and Spague Dawley rat when compared to virgin subjects. This suggests an increase in the local tissue kidney levels of Ang-(1-7). Therefore, in the current project, we are assessing the local kidney production of Ang-(1-7) and ACE2 in virgin, pregnant  (days 5, 15, 19), and 19 day pregnant RUPP Sprauge Dawley rats. Once we understand the production of Ang-(1-7), both circulating and within the tissues in normal pregnancy, we can use this information to understand preeclampsia, an abnormal state of pregancy that causes an increase in blood pressure leading to maternal and infant death.
