Research Description:

Hypertension, vascular endothelial dysfunction and its relationship to the renin-angiotensin system
Progression of renal disease
Ethical aspects of clinical research activities

Current Research:

Ongoing studies (VIOS, TROPHY, ACCOMPLISH, ONTARGET) test the theory of the importance of the renin-angiotensin system in maintaining the integrity of our blood vessels and the protection of our kidneys, brain and heart as we lower blood pressure with ACEI's and ARB's.  The factors that are associated with this protection and how they can be appreciated and treated in the clinical setting are the focus of attention.  Standard and novel approaches to the treatments for limiting the progression of renal disease using ACEI and ARB plus alternative medical products are under investigation.  Dr. Smith has the patients for the use of ACE inhibitors for renal protection.
