2008 BSE APPLICATION

PROGRAM: University partners include Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Wright State University, Winston-Salem State University and Central State University, in the U.S., and Federal University of Minas Gerais, University of São Paulo, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and São Judas Tadeus University in Brazil.  The purpose of the program is to train U.S. and Brazilian students in integrative biology and to strengthen interchange of cultural and scientific values to widen the horizons of participants.  Emphasis is on increasing diversity in the sciences by including schools with large minority populations as partners to encourage students from under-represented groups to participate in foreign exchange activities.

ELIGIBILITY:   Students applying to this program must -


Ø       Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident of the United States;

Ø       Be an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing at one of the U.S. partner schools;

Ø       Have at least one quarter/semester of Portuguese language or equivalent proficiency

Ø       Under-represented minorities (i.e. African American, Hispanic, Alaskan Native, Asian-American, Native American or Pacific Islander) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Ø       U.S. Citizen Passport and availability to obtain Brazilian Visa

 

PROGRAM DATES AND INFORMATION: The U.S.A. – Brazil Consortium Biomedical Sciences Exchange Program will begin in mid-June 2008 for a group of students (~ 4-8) to go together to Brazil for a one semester program.  The program will begin with an intensive course in Portuguese which will include language training and cultural activities.  The regular semester will begin in August and end in November.  Undergraduate and/or graduate students will take courses at the Brazilian university and participate in a research apprenticeship program.  Program participants will receive financial support for housing and travel.  They will pay tuition at their home institution and will receive credit for the courses taken in Brazil.  The fellowship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) and the Brazilian Ministry of Education’s Office for Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES).
