Introduction
Financial assistance is available for students who, for financial reasons, could not otherwise attend Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The school considers the primary responsibility of financing medical school to be that of the family and the student. Therefore, to be considered for WFUSM scholarship, grant, or loan funds, it will be necessary to provide parental financial information as part of the financial aid application.
On the day of interview, applicants meet with the Financial Aid Officer and are provided general information about aid and appropriate application materials. On request, individual consultations can be arranged.
Aid to medical students from all sources totaled over $19 million for the 2006-2007 academic year. Of this amount, over $3.8 million were from Wake Forest University School of Medicine sources.
Although scholarships and grants are available to eligible students, approximately 80% of our medical students borrow from student loan programs to meet their cost of attendance. Nationally, the average total debt of all 2007 medical school graduates was $139,517. Our class of 2007 average debt was $138,553. Average debt among 2007 medical school graduates at public schools was $129,810 and $156,804 at private medical schools.
Scholarships, loans, and grants are awarded in accordance with criteria governing each source of funds and on the basis of financial need.
