Faculty (PI) Assistance

Moving to or Working in a Laboratory

Listed below are some things that are necessary when working in a laboratory environment.

  • Complete and submit a PPE Hazard Assessment form
  • Complete an inventory through WFUHS’ Chemical Management Inventory System (CMIS)
  • Place necessary signage
  • Secure flammables in flammable cabinet
  • Review your evacuation routes
  • Locate Chemical Spill Kits
  • Ensure equipment is currently certified and/or satisfactorily operational (biosafety cabinet/fume hood)
  • Make sure waste is labeled and disposed of properly (see Waste Management regarding chemical, biological, and radioactive waste)
  • Complete on-line training:  Fundamentals of Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Waste Fundamentals

Working with Hazardous Materials

Chemical - Review list of chemicals requiring Chemical Safety Committee approval.  If required, submit a Chemical Safety application.

Biological - A Biosafety application must be submitted and approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee if working with the following:

  • Biosafety Level 2 materials (Refer to BMBL, 5th Edition)
  • Non-exempt Recombinant DNA material
  • Human Gene Therapy

Radioactive

  • Review Radiation Safety Handbook
  • Attend Radiation Safety Class within 90 days
  • Submit application to General or Radiation Safety Committee, as appropriate, for use of Radioactive Materials
  • If using radiation producing equipment, contact Radiation Safety Officer, David Howell or 716-1202.
