FIRE AND EXPLOSION
QUICK RESPONSE = R. A. C. E.
IF FIRE IS IN YOUR AREA STAY CALM - DON'T SHOUT "FIRE", USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE: R. A. C. E.
R - RESCUE:
- Immediate action may be needed to save a life. Move patients in immediate danger and close that door.
- Yet, do not delay the alarm.
A - ALARM:
- Alert help by pulling fire pull station.
- Notify Emergency Dispatch of the exact fire location by, dialing 716-9111.
- Let faculty and staff in the area know that there is a CODE RED.
- Fire alarm pull stations are located at all exit areas and some nursing stations.
C - CONTAIN:
- Close doors and windows, to prevent smoke spread and to cut off air supply to fire.
E - EVACUATE:

Remember RACE
Bowman Gray Campus
- Medical Center Security will respond to the scene to assist in building evacuation and to meet and assist the Winston Salem Fire Department.
- Do not re-enter the building until advised by the Fire Department or Medical Center Security.
Chestnut Campus
- Budd Security will respond to the scene to meet and assist the Fire Department.
- Do not re-enter the building until advised by the Fire Department or Budd Security.
Friedberg Campus
- Budd Security will respond to the scene to meet and assist the Fire Department.
- Do not re-enter the building until advised by the Fire Department or Budd Security.
IF YOU ARE TRAPPED IN A BUILDING
- If a window is available, place an article of clothing (shirt, coat, etc.) outside a window as a marker for rescue crews.
- If there is no window, stay near the floor where the air will be less toxic. Shout at regular intervals to alert emergency crews of your location. Do not panic.
- If the door is warm, do not open it. If smoke is entering through the cracks around the door, stuff something in the cracks to slow the flow.
