The General Practice Residency in Dentistry:

Application Process
The Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center General Practice Residency for Dentistry participates in the MATCH process for the purposes of filling two incoming resident vacancies each year. Applications must be made through the PASS service. Information regarding each of these requirements may be found through the appropriate web link above. Typically, qualified applicants are offered a personal interview through a site visit on one of two days in the Fall preceding the program start date of July 1. The interview allows the applicant to experience the medical center facilities as well as the private group practice facility. Additionally, applicants are afforded the opportunity to meet with the current residents as well as faculty.

The Medical Center
North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Wake Forest University School of Medicine, affiliated since 1941, form one of 127 medical centers in the United States. The Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center is a 830-bed regional referral center providing complete patient care for a geographic area with a population of nearly five million. The institution is also devoted to continuing achievements in medical research and to fostering the development of knowledge, attitudes and skills to serve as a basis for a rewarding professional life.
Dental Clinical Facilities
As of June 1999 the Department of Dentistry affiliated with a national dental management services organization to insure the capital and business expertise for the future growth of dentistry at the Medical Center. The group practice is now organized under the structure of University Dental Associates, Raymond Garrison, DDS, PA, a professional association, and all faculty and residents conduct their clinical practice within the structure of University Dental Associates. This hybrid model has worked very well for the Department of Dentistry in its conduct of the two-year General Practice Residency Program. The residency program uses dental clinical facilities in two locations at the Medical Center. For hospital dental services, a well equipped facility is available in North Carolina Baptist Hospital and for community based dental services, a modern 10,000 square foot facility is available in the Medical Center’s CompRehab Plaza. This facility is an excellent site for the multidisciplinary practice of dentistry where the dental resident works as an integral part of a multi-specialty group practice. The clinical practice environment is a busy and accountable model with about 30,000 outpatient visits per year and affords the resident opportunity for broad based clinical experience and important practice management education. The academic and administrative offices of the Department occupy an additional 2,400 square feet with office space allocated to each dental resident.
Salary and Benefits
Residents are salary paid for the 2 year term. Information regarding the amount and schedules for this salary is available through the House Staff office web link found above. In addition, the resident receives medical insurance benefits/ hospitalization, malpractice insurance coverage, parking facilities that are equivalent to those of the medical house staff. Also, clinic jackets and dental intern permits are provided for through the Department of Dentistry.
The first-year resident has three continuing education days. The second-year resident has five continuing education days and receives a maximum of $500 for travel to professional meetings and continuing education programs. All residents have two board exam days available during their second year. In addition to nine paid holidays, the first-year resident has ten working days of paid vacation and the second-year resident has 13 working days of paid vacation.
A resident not licensed by the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners is required to obtain an intern permit as outlined in the Dental Laws of North Carolina. Additionally, successfully matched residents of the program must also be U.S. citizens and have graduated from an accredited U.S. dental school.

Academic Experience
Residents of the program participate in a wide array of both didactic and practical, clinical instruction. The didactic experience involves weekly lectures in subjects including but not limited to oral surgery, medical diagnosis, anesthesia, implant therapy, endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, and practice management. These lectures are conducted by Dentistry faculty and Medical Center physicians as well as visiting specialists. Once a month, both residents and faculty also convene for an evening of literature review as a group study club.
