Scientific & Photomicroscopy
From specimens and gels, to the most challenging of scientific samples, our knowledge of the art and science of photography enable us to help you obtain meaningful information from your samples. The department owns and supports NIH image, Reindeer Graphics Image Processing Tool Kit, and Sigma Scan Pro which can provide analytical data from your images.
We maintain a digital microscopy suite on the first floor of the Gray Building and are available to train or assist researchers in producing quality micrographs for publication and research. After an initial 1 hour training session (billed to your department) the equipment is available for use between 8am-5pm at no cost. Sign-up to use our microscope.
Our microscope is capable of bright field, dark field, fluorescent, nomarski, and phase contrast imaging. It is outfitted with plan-apo objectives from x1 to x100.
The microscope camera, Diagnostic Instruments Digital Spot RT, is a 3-pass capture device with a thermoelectrically cooled CCD. It is ideally suited for fluorescence and other types of long exposure microscopy. The camera is networked making it simple to save your images to any departmental server. If you prefer, it is also possible to burn images to CD.
Our macroscope is able to photograph at lower powers than the microscope. It is capable of reflective, transmitted and darkfield illuminations. It also can be used to photograph 3 dimensional objects.
