School of Medicine and YWCA Collaborative to strengthen families and neighborhoods

WFU School of

Medicine –YWCA Collaborative

This is an innovative collaboration between the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the YWCA of Winston-Salem to generate and test ideas that will improve the health of children and families in our community.

Collaborative Mission

Our mission is to build mutually beneficial collaborations between community and academic partners that promote the development, implementation, and translation of innovative and sustainable interventions that measurably improve child health by strengthening families and neighborhoods.

Our initial focus is on childhood obesity; but our focus may expand to include other childhood health needs and diseases, as well as health outcomes across the lifespan.

Things that will happen here:

·       Community groups and members will meet with Medical Center faculty to develop ideas

·       Educational programs to learn about healthy lifestyles

·       Hands-on programs to learn how to build wellness skills such as healthy cooking.

·       Health screens such as blood pressure, height, and weight screenings.

The Collaborative is available to YWCA members and to non-members for some special programs.
