NC Requirements
North Carolina Medical Board CME Requirements
Effective January 1, 2001
50 hours/year
20 hours educational provider-initiated (i.e. Category 1)
General medical reading is not acceptable
30 hours physician-initiated (i.e. Category 1 or 2)
AOA and ACGME physicians are exempt
After initial licensure, 1 year exemption
Complete NC Medical Board's registration form annually
Keep records for 3 consecutive years
May be inspected
Educational Provider-Initiated CME:
All education offered by institutions or organizations accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and reciprocating organizations or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

Scientific/clinical presentations or publications
Enduring material (Audio-Video)
Skill development
Physician-Initiated CME:
Practice based self-study
Colleague consultations - PAL
Office based outcomes research
Study initiated by patient inquiries
Study of community health problems
Successful specialty board examination, certification or recertification
Teaching (professional, patient/public health)
Mentoring
Morbidity and Morality (M&M) conference
Journal clubs
Creation of generic patient care pathways and guidelines
