What we are studying
The purpose of this study is to understand the changes that occur in individuals who have a special type of inherited kidney disease. This disease is often called medullary cystic kidney disease. Characteristics of this disease include: 1) The urine analysis shows little blood or protein. 2) There are usually a number of family members affected. Affected individuals have one parent who also has the disease. 3) Affected individuals develop slowly progressive kidney disease. This study will identify individuals with this condition and compare their kidney function to healthy individuals and individuals with other types of kidney disease. To identify the genetic causes of these diseases, we will obtain DNA samples and compare the DNA of different affected and unaffected family members.
